Bl. Solanus Casey was born into a family of Wisconsin Irish immigrants in 1870. In his mid-twenties, Solanus heard the voice of the Blessed Virgin Mary telling him to go to Detroit. He acted upon this and joined the Capuchin Friars in Detroit. After his ordination, he went to New York to minister to the people in Yonkers and Harlem. Then was sent back to Detroit and was the porter of the Capuchin convent, where he earned the nickname, "the Doorkeeper." He was a soft spoken and charitable friar who extensively cared for the poor, especially during the Great Depression. Although he passed in 1957, Catholics kept asking for his intercession and had a miracle validated in 2017 which triggered his beatification.
