St. Marianne Cope was a religious sister in the 1800 and 1900s and is known for her work on the Hawaiian Island of Molokai. Before going to Hawaii, she founded the first public hospital in Syracuse, NY. She became the Superior General of her congregation of sisters and answered the call from the King Kalakaua of Hawaii to send help to care for leprosy suffers. When arriving in Hawaii, she founded a hospital to care for those with leprosy and then made her way to the island of Molokai to care for Father Damien as he suffered from leprosy. After his death, she continued to care for the victims of leprosy until she died at the age of 80. She is a patron saint of those with leprosy and the outcast.
