St. Cyril of Alexandria

Patron Saint of Alexandria

St. Cyril of Alexandria was the Archbishop of Alexandria in the fifth century. He was bishop during a period of intense controversy. Cyril had to face theological attacks from all sides, especially from Nestorius, and worked to refute heresy forcefully but with Christian moderation. He was a prolific writer, and his teachings earned him enduring respect for centuries; many of his works survive today and he is recognized as a Doctor of the Church. St. Cyril is especially remembered for his development of Mariology, in particular the Marian title of “Theotokos” meaning Mother of God or God-bearer.
