St. Stephen of Hungary

Patron Saint of Hungary

St. Stephen, also known as King Saint Stephen, was the first King of Hungary and lived in the eleventh century. St. Stephen was born a pagan and was eventually baptized around the age of ten along with his father. When St. Stephen succeeded his father as chief of the Magyars, he began to Christianize the country of Hungary. St. Stephen asked for the Pope’s assistance in his evangelical mission and was named Stephen the King of Hungary on Christmas Day in 1001. St. Stephen is the patron of Hungary.
