St. Marguerite Bourgeoys

St. Marguerite Bourgeoys was a seventeenth-century nun, originally from France, who founded the Congregation of Notre Dame of Montreal in New France, now known as Canada. When she arrived in Canada, she realized that a congregation of cloistered nuns would not be best suited to assisting the needs of the people of her area. Thus, she founded one of the first congregations of religious sisters with an active apostolate in the Catholic Church, and they helped educate those who came to New France. Marguerite was the first female saint of Canada.
