St. Francis Borgia

Patron Saint of Earthquakes

St. Francis Borgia was a Spanish duke in the 1500s who joined the Jesuits after his wife died and he had taken care of his children. Even though his family wished that he remain the Duke of Gandía, he gave the position to his son so he could focus on his religious activities. He joined the Jesuits, and after initially running from responsibility, he realized that his experience as duke would make him a good administrator for the order. He founded many colleges and organized Jesuit missions. He was eventually elected the third Superior General of the Jesuits and used his administrative and diplomatic skills to help the order and the wider Church.
