St. Bonaventure

St. Bonaventure was a Franciscan intellectual, theologian, philosopher, and the Cardinal Bishop of Albano. Although he received the degree of master and had a promising career in teaching, he was elected Minister General of the Franciscan Order and had to stop teaching. During his time as Minister General, he oversaw the Franciscans for 17 years and worked to bring together the intellectual and pastoral elements of the faith. It was through Bonaventure’s time as Minister General that the Franciscans grew to be a more prominent order. Throughout his life, Bonaventure ensured Jesus was at the center of all his actions. This earned him the title “Seraphic Doctor”, similar to his contemporary St. Thomas Aquinas being known as the “Angelic Doctor”.
